Introduction and why CBT is awesome

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most effective ways to help yourself achieve goals and experience positive changes in your life. You should try to comprehend what CBT therapy is, because this will benefit you in the long run. There are some good reasons for this.

Problems

Depression and anxiety are a few of the wide variety of problems that can be effectively cured by this form of psychotherapy. This form of therapy addresses dysfunctional emotions, cognitive processes and content through a number of goal-oriented systematic procedures. Away from the fact that CBT is based upon cognitive principles of the human psychology, it is also supported by many scientific studies and backed by a large number of scientists.

Save time and money

CBT therapy is very collaborative form of therapy. You will need to be able to work together with the therapist. That being said, I think it’s even better to learn and understand the fundamentals of CBT Therapy because when you ultimately become skilled in using CBT on your own you can use it to meet the challenges in your life, long after your therapy sessions have ended. This way you save yourself a lot of time and money.

The main goal

The main focus of CBT are the patterns of thoughts and behavior. These two maintain both adaptive and maladaptive behavior. The meaning of this is that patterns are learned, and that new patterns can implemented when old ones are no longer relevant. It is considered to be a very short term, active, collaborative and present orientated form of therapy.

CBT aims not to disregard how problems have started, like childhood experiences, but to discover and change the cause of the problem. The therapist has a strong collaborative relationship with his client, and encourages him to be active in applying the different techniques both within and between the therapy sessions.

Therapy sessions are often short-term, and tend to range from 6 to 30 sessions over a period of sixteen months. And the techniques learnt during these session are very valuable tools that can help you in the future.

Cognition system

Cognition is the complex mental process of perceiving, reasoning, remembering, evaluating and imagining. The majority of our emotions and behaviors are the direct result of our cognitions regarding what we think or believe about ourselves, others and the world. How we interpret and evaluate what happens to us are formed and shaped by these cognitions. And cognitions also influence how we feel about these experiences and provide a guide to how we should react and respond.

Our underlying beliefs, thoughts, interpretation, biases can be very harmful to our wellbeing. This can lead to unnecessary suffering and often causes maladaptive behavioral patterns. The purpose of cognitive behavioral therapy is to provide many methods for becoming more aware of our cognitions and for changing them when they are distorted or are not useful. Cognitive restructuring is the term used to describe these methods.

Trapped by behaviors

The emphasize of the behavioral aspects of CBT is that what we do has a role in shaping how we feel, what we tend to believe, and how we behave in the future. During CBT sessions you will identify which behaviors are most likely to maintain the problem, and of course which behaviors are likely to help produce positive changes.
